I don’t want to be a stupid girl. In a song by Pink, called ‘Stupid Girls’, she makes fun of girls who flaunt their bodies, do anything for attention and forget to use their God-given brains, using their sexuality to get what they want.
Some of the lyrics of Pink’s song are ‘What happened to the dreams of a girl president, she’s dancing in the video next to 50 Cent.’ When did it change to girls just wanting to be famous, wanting to be movie stars and acting like divas? What happened to wanting to be viewed as intelligent, intellectual people?
Sure, we go to school and may be just as smart as or smarter than a guy in our classes. But when our mouths are shut and we are communicating through our clothes, attitude and appearance, what are we saying? Walking from the Mackenzie building the other day with some classmates, we were wrapped in scarves, mittens and clutching our coats because it as so cold. In front of us was a girl in stilettos, and a barely-there mini skirt underneath her coat, we had to look twice to see if she even had a bottom on. We hoped she didn’t drop anything and have to bend down because the entire world would have gotten a show.
It is fun to know that we as women have the ability to make guys walk into walls and drool all over themselves when we walk into the room, but there is a time and a place for everything.
When I see Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan on T.V. they’re usually scantily clad, defending something they said or did. They make a living by flaunting their bodies and pulling stunts to get noticed so people will buy their albums, perfumes or movies. Sure, Jessica Simpson can sing, but who notices the song when she’s prancing around in a string bikini, draped over a car in the video? Sure, Lindsey Lohan makes cute movies but who notices when she’s dropping pounds and showing everything in a photo shoot?
Whether or not these women are smart doesn’t really matter to people, especially men. How can you expect to be heard when the guys are too distracted by your boobs in their face?
You should care more about people starving to death in Africa, children getting abducted, and people living in poverty, than whether or not you’re having a good hair day or what you’re going to wear to the mall. In the ’Stupid Girls’ song it says, ‘Disasters all around, world despaired, their only concern, will they **** up my hair?’
I think it is time that we set a good example for the younger girls, our little sisters, our daughters and nieces. They are going to grow up thinking that school isn’t important and you can get everything you want by dressing in barely-there clothing and flipping your hair.
We are making way for a generation of girls who think it is okay to prostitute yourself for the things you want. That sure isn’t the idea I want my little sister having. Of course, I may be over exaggerating and that may not happen at all. But look at the little girls and the way they act and dress now already. You see these little 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds in the mall wearing tiny tank tops, heels, tiny skirts and scads of make up. They walk around as if they own the place and they are the queens of the world. Their ‘I am so cool’ attitude is already too big for their little bodies. Can you imagine when they hit high school? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to take that chance, it is time to correct this behaviour.
Why do we want to be known as stupid girls? Why sexy rather than smart? I know a lot of girls play dumb and ask for help to make guys feel smarter and perhaps like them more. I find it all very confusing. I like to be called pretty and feel good but I also want to be thought of as smart, talented and able to carry on an intelligent conversation.
I guess it’s where your priorities lie. What is more important to you? Getting everything you can out of your education, or turning heads? Looks fade but what you learn sticks with you for the long haul.
In the end how do you want to be remembered when you leave?
